Criminology Jobs and Careers

People often wonder what types of careers criminologists can get into after they graduate from college. Criminology is a multidisciplinary subject, which means that studying criminology can take you in many different directions. A study in criminology can also be the starting point for or continuation of another study (for example for police officers, lawyers, psychologists).

Criminal Justice Careers and Jobs

Here is a list of examples of criminology jobs and careers:

  • Crime analyst or profiler at a police department
  • Policy advisor, case manager, or manager at private security companies, police, criminal justice, courts, probation service, victim assistance programs, child protection services, prisons, and the judiciary
  • Prison, correctional, or restorative justice officer
  • Fraud and organizational crime expert or operational risk manager at banks, businesses and insurance companies
  • Forensic accountant
  • Public safety expert at local government, ministry, embassies, or international organizations
  • Social worker
  • Youth worker
  • Officer at customs and border protection
  • Academic researcher at university
  • Researcher, data analyst, or policy analyst at commercial research bureau, governmental institution, or non-governmental organization. E.g. on causes of crime, crime prevention, or effectiveness of sanctions
  • Public safety consultant
  • Counsellor, for example in the area of drug counseling
  • Crime prevention coordinator
  • Crime journalist
  • Lecturer or professor at a college or university
